Phobia Therapy in Kew

A phobia rarely makes sense from the outside, and often not from the inside either. The fear attaches itself to something specific, a height, an insect, a confined space, a particular situation, while the person experiencing it usually knows, on some level, that the danger isn't proportionate to the reaction. That gap between knowing and feeling is often what makes phobias so frustrating to live with.

At KYND Psychology, therapy for phobias starts from the idea that the feared object is rarely the real subject of the fear. It's often a stand-in, a specific, containable target for something harder to locate or name directly. This is why a phobia can feel so oddly precise: the fear has found a shape it can point to, even if that shape isn't where the anxiety actually began.

Working from a psychoanalytic foundation, and drawing on evidence-based, exposure-informed approaches where they serve the person in front of me, I offer a space to understand what a particular fear has come to represent, alongside practical ways to reduce its hold on daily life. This isn't only about facing the feared object. It's about understanding what it's standing in for, always in service of the person, never the protocol.

Why Fear Finds a Specific Target

Freud wrote about phobia as a displacement, where an anxiety too diffuse or unacceptable to face directly gets attached instead to something concrete and avoidable. This is often why avoiding the feared object brings relief but never resolution: the underlying anxiety simply waits, still unaddressed, behind the specific fear standing in for it. Understanding what a phobia has displaced attention from is often what allows its intensity to genuinely ease, rather than just being managed around.

What Sessions Look Like

Early sessions focus on understanding your particular phobia: when it began, what it has come to restrict, and what, if anything, was happening in your life around the time it developed. From there, therapy moves between practical strategies for facing the fear and a slower exploration of what it may be standing in for.

Sessions are available for adults and young adults at our practice in Kew. Many clients travel from Hawthorn, Camberwell, Balwyn, and Richmond for a therapeutic approach that treats them as a whole person rather than a diagnosis. Clinical psychology offers structure and practical strategies, psychoanalytic thinking offers depth and meaning, and my training in both allows sessions to move between immediate relief and a slower exploration of where this fear began. Explore all therapy services

A fear this specific usually has a reason. It can be understood.
