Bipolar Disorder & Mood Regulation Therapy in Kew

Living with bipolar disorder often means living with two versions of the same fear: the fear of the low, and the fear of the high. Depressive episodes bring their own familiar weight, but the elevated states, the bursts of energy, urgency, or expansiveness, carry a different kind of difficulty, one that can be harder to name and even harder to ask for help with.

At KYND Psychology, therapy for bipolar disorder focuses not just on managing episodes as they arise, but on understanding the underlying rhythm of a person's emotional life. Mood regulation is rarely only a biological matter. It is shaped by history, relationships, and the ways a person has learned to cope with instability, sometimes long before a diagnosis gave it a name.

Working from a psychoanalytic foundation, and drawing on evidence-based, mood-stabilising approaches where they serve the person in front of me, I offer a space to explore what each mood state means, what it protects against, and what tends to trigger a shift from one to the other. This isn't about flattening a person's emotional range. It's about building a steadier relationship with it, always in service of the person, never the protocol.

Why Highs Can Be as Difficult as Lows

There is often an assumption that elevated mood states are simply the easier side of bipolar disorder, even something to look forward to. In practice, they frequently carry their own distress: racing thoughts that won't quiet, decisions made too quickly to fully consider, or a sense of invincibility that later gives way to shame. Understanding what a high state is defending against, often a return of the very low it seems to escape, can be as important as understanding the depressive episodes themselves.

What Sessions Look Like

Early sessions focus on mapping how mood shifts actually unfold for you: the early signs, the triggers, and the patterns that tend to repeat. From there, therapy moves at a pace shaped by where you are in your mood cycle, with more structure during unstable periods and more exploratory work when things are settled.

Sessions are available for adults and young adults at our practice in Kew. Many clients travel from Hawthorn, Camberwell, Balwyn, and Richmond for a therapeutic approach that treats them as a whole person rather than a diagnosis. Clinical psychology offers structure and consistency, psychoanalytic thinking offers depth and meaning, and my training in both allows sessions to move between practical stability strategies and a slower exploration of where these patterns began.

If depression is the primary concern without the mood elevations associated with bipolar disorder, our Anxiety & Depression Therapy page may be a more direct fit. Explore all therapy services

You don't have to face the highs and lows on your own.
