ADHD & Autism
For many neurodivergent adults, therapy has historically meant being asked to fit into a framework that wasn't built with them in mind. This isn't that. Therapy for ADHD and Autism at KYND Psychology starts from the understanding that neurodivergence isn't a problem to be corrected. It's a different way of experiencing, processing, and relating to the world, one that often comes with real difficulties, particularly when it has gone unrecognised or unsupported for years.
Many adults arrive here after a lifetime of sensing they were different without having the language for it, or after a diagnosis, sometimes recent, sometimes decades overdue, that reframes a whole history of experiences that never quite made sense before. The work isn't about eliminating traits that are simply part of how you're wired. It's about understanding the difficulties that have built up around them: burnout from years of masking, anxiety from navigating environments that weren't designed for you, or relationships strained by miscommunication that runs in both directions, not just one.
Working from a psychoanalytic foundation, and drawing on neurodiversity-affirming, evidence-based approaches where they serve the person in front of me, I offer a space that takes your way of experiencing the world as the starting point, not the thing to be fixed. Always in service of the person, never the protocol.
The Cost of Masking
The psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott wrote about the difference between a person's true self and a false self, a version built to meet the expectations of others, often at real cost to the person underneath it. For many neurodivergent adults, masking works in a similar way: years of consciously or unconsciously suppressing natural ways of moving, speaking, or responding in order to appear more neurotypical. This often comes at the price of exhaustion, a fragile sense of identity, and a growing distance from what actually feels true. Making room for the self that was hidden away is frequently central to this work.
What Sessions Look Like
Early sessions focus on understanding your particular experience of ADHD or Autism, what has been difficult, what has been misunderstood by others, and where masking or compensation may have taken the greatest toll. From there, therapy moves at a pace and in a direction shaped by what matters most to you, not a standardised program.
Sessions are available for adults and young adults at our practice in Kew. Many clients travel from Hawthorn, Camberwell, Balwyn, and Richmond for a therapeutic approach that treats them as a whole person rather than a diagnosis. Clinical psychology offers structure and practical strategies, psychoanalytic thinking offers depth and meaning, and my training in both allows sessions to move between everyday support and a slower exploration of identity and history.
