Eating Disorder Therapy in Kew

An eating disorder is rarely, at its core, about food. Food and the body become the language through which something else gets expressed: a need for control in a life that feels otherwise unmanageable, a way of managing unbearable feelings, or a relationship to the self that has become harsh, punishing, and difficult to soften.

At KYND Psychology, therapy for eating disorders looks beneath the behaviours themselves to understand what they have come to mean and manage. This isn't about willpower, and it isn't about simply being told to eat differently or think differently about your body. These patterns usually developed for a reason, often as a way of coping with something that couldn't be processed or expressed directly at the time.

Working from a psychoanalytic foundation, and in coordination with medical and dietetic care where appropriate, I offer a space to understand what these patterns have been protecting against, alongside the practical support needed for safety and stability. This isn't about a quick return to "normal" eating. It's slower, more attentive work, always in service of the person, never the protocol.

Why Control Over the Body Can Feel Like Control Over Everything Else

Psychoanalytic thinking often understands eating disorders as a way of managing what feels otherwise unmanageable, redirecting anxiety, conflict, or a sense of powerlessness onto something that can, at least for a time, feel controllable. This is often why change can't come from willpower or logic alone: the eating disorder is doing important psychological work, even as it causes real harm. Understanding what it has been managing is usually where lasting change becomes possible.

What Sessions Look Like

Early sessions focus on understanding your particular relationship with food, body, and control, and what these patterns have been helping you manage. Where appropriate, this work happens alongside your GP, dietitian, or other treating professionals, as eating disorders often require coordinated care.

Sessions are available for adults and young adults at our practice in Kew. Many clients travel from Hawthorn, Camberwell, Balwyn, and Richmond for a therapeutic approach that treats them as a whole person rather than a diagnosis. Clinical psychology offers structure and safety, psychoanalytic thinking offers depth and meaning, and my training in both allows sessions to move between practical stability and a slower exploration of where these patterns began. Explore all therapy services

This isn't about willpower. It's about understanding what's really being managed.
